Doctors' phones: a hidden source of superbugs

Why a doctor's phone is more dangerous than it seems

The smartphone has become an indispensable working tool for doctors and nurses: they use it to consult colleagues, review test results, and manage documentation. Yet it is precisely this ubiquity that makes the device a potentially dangerous object. Research shows that the surface of a phone's screen and body can accumulate pathogenic microorganisms, including so-called superbugs — strains resistant to most modern antibiotics.

Medical staff pick up their phones dozens of times a day — before and after examining patients, in procedure rooms, and in intensive care units. Gloves and thorough handwashing do not always extend to the handling of personal devices. As a result, the gadget becomes a kind of «bridge» for transferring microbes from one patient to another.

Which bacteria are most commonly found on phones

Among the microorganisms researchers have identified on healthcare workers' smartphones, the following are of particular concern:

  • Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA — methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), capable of causing severe infections of the skin, lungs, and bloodstream;
  • Klebsiella pneumoniae and other carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae;
  • Acinetobacter baumannii — a causative agent of hospital-acquired pneumonia and sepsis;
  • various multidrug-resistant strains of Escherichia coli.

The problem is compounded by the fact that many of these bacteria survive for extended periods on plastic and glass — the materials from which modern smartphones are made.

What can be done to reduce the risk

Experts in infection control recommend incorporating the disinfection of personal devices into hospital hygiene protocols. Regularly wiping phone surfaces with special wipes or alcohol-based solutions significantly reduces the microbial load. It is also important to avoid using a smartphone directly at the patient's bedside without subsequently disinfecting the device.
