Why home remedies don't always work
Many are used to treating ARVI with "old-school" methods: warming the feet, consuming large amounts of garlic, or using alcohol compresses. It is important to understand that heat treatments can be dangerous when you have a high fever, and aggressive products irritate the mucous membrane, slowing down the recovery process. The body needs rest, plenty of fluids, and fresh air, not extreme methods.
When self-medication becomes dangerous
Most colds go away on their own with home care. However, there are "red flags" that require immediate medical attention:
- A fever above 38.5°C that does not subside with antipyretics.
- Severe shortness of breath, chest pain, or difficulty breathing.
- Pronounced weakness, confusion, or severe headache.
- No improvement within 5–7 days or a sudden deterioration after a period of recovery.
Remember that only a qualified specialist can assess the severity of your condition and select appropriate therapy. Do not self-medicate, especially if the symptoms cause you concern.
