Reactivation of viral infections, including hepatitis B, is common in patients with oncological diseases or haematological malignancies, especially during immunosuppressive therapy [3]. This means that HDV infection is only possible in people already infected with HBV. Co-infection with HBV and HDV often leads to a more severe disease course and accelerated progression to cirrhosis and liver failure.

Hepatitis C: Chronic Course and Therapy

Hepatitis C (HCV) is known for its ability to cause chronic liver inflammation, which can lead to serious long-term consequences, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. Diagnosis and General Principles of Treatment

Early diagnosis of viral hepatitis is crucial for preventing serious complications. Common flu-like symptoms, such as fatigue, nausea, and fever, can be the first signs of hepatitis [8]. Laboratory blood tests are used to confirm the diagnosis, including determining the levels of liver enzymes (ALT, AST), bilirubin, and specific viral markers (antibodies and/or viral RNA/DNA) [1, 2, 6].

The treatment of viral hepatitis depends heavily on the virus type and the stage of the disease. For hepatitis A and E, supportive therapy aimed at relieving symptoms and maintaining liver function is generally used [1, 6]. In cases of hepatitis B and C, especially during a chronic course, antiviral drugs are used, which can significantly improve prognosis and prevent disease progression [5]. It is important to note that even in acute hepatitis A, in the event of autoimmune hepatitis development, conservative treatments such as ursodeoxycholic acid and silymarin may be used [6].

Hepatitis Prevention: The Key to Liver Health

Prevention is the most effective way to combat viral hepatitis. The main measures include:

  • Vaccination: Effective vaccines against hepatitis A and B are available [1, 2]. Vaccination against hepatitis A is especially important for individuals traveling to endemic areas and risk groups [1].
  • Hygiene: Thorough handwashing, consuming clean water, and safe food help prevent the spread of hepatitis A and E, which are transmitted via the fecal-oral route [1, 7].
  • Safe Sex: Using barrier contraception methods reduces the risk of hepatitis B transmission and, in some cases, hepatitis A [7, 8].
  • Avoiding Contact with Blood: Do not share needles, razors, toothbrushes, and other items that may contain traces of blood to prevent the transmission of hepatitis B and C.
  • Screening: Regular screening for viral hepatitis is recommended for risk groups, including patients with immunodeficiency states or chronic diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease [3, 4, 5].

Remember that seeking medical attention promptly upon the appearance of any suspicious symptoms and following prevention recommendations significantly reduces the risk of developing and progressing viral hepatitis.
